Overview
The Mathematics department strives to instil confidence and resilience in our students in Mathematical problem-solving, to enrich their learning experiences and to promote critical, adaptive and inventive thinking.
Learning Mindsets and Learning Strategies
Math teachers gave greater focus this year in developing the 4 beliefs that drive a student's desire to learn, to persevere through productive challenges and to succeed academically. As a school, we simplified these 4 mindsets with easy-to-remember phrases namely iCan (Self-efficacy), iGrow (Growth Mindset), iValue (Relevance) and iBelong (Social). Teachers came together to develop lessons that foster these beliefs in order to build and sustain the learning tenacity in students.
As a start, the Math department selected a learning strategy known as the Feynman Technique to transform surface-level memorisation into deep conceptual understanding. Students practice explaining complex ideas in the simplest possible terms. In so doing, they are able to refine their knowledge and identify their learning gaps.
Promoting thinking through oracy
The department uses the 5 Practices in Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions as a framework to help teachers manage inquiry-based lessons. This centres on 5 key steps: Anticipating, Monitoring, Selecting, Sequencing and Connecting. Students have the opportunity to record their explanations and solution and this is followed by participation from their peers. Teachers are able to collect information about students' thought processes and give feedback in person or via AI.
Strategies for Active and Independent Learning
Teachers continue to promote agency in the students through the use of rubrics that guides their learning as well as EdTech
