To nurture JYians to be concerned global citizens who are passionate about the Humanities.

Overview

The Juying Humanities Department aims to nurture every JYian with an analytical and inquisitive mindset, aligning with our school’s vision of cultivating a gracious community of lifelong learners with strength of character. Through the Humanities, we hope to empower JYians to become well-informed, responsible citizens with a global perspective, equipped to navigate an increasingly complex world.

We believe in cultivating students who are confident, self-directed, critical, and reflective thinkers. To achieve this, we focus on three key areas:

Knowledge & Understanding – Building a strong foundation in historical, geographical, and societal perspectives.
Skills & Processes – Developing critical thinking, research, inquiry, and communication skills.
Values & Attitudes – Fostering empathy, ethical reasoning, and responsible citizenship.

Learning in Humanities extends beyond the classroom, as we believe that education has no boundaries. Through immersive learning journeys and experiential activities, we inspire students to engage with real-world issues and deepen their appreciation for the complexities of society.

Together, we create a vibrant learning environment that encourages curiosity, reflection, and a lifelong passion for understanding the world around us.

As part of JYSS Humanities Program, our learning Journeys are specially designed to provide JYians with immersive, hands-on experiences to deepen their understanding of historical, geographical and social concepts. Through visits to significant sites, guided tours, and interactive exhibits, our JYians can connect classroom knowledge to real-world contexts. These journeys foster critical thinking, cultural appreciation, and a greater awareness of societal development and national issues, enriching their overall educational experience. Here are the some of the Learning Journeys our JYians embarked.

Key Programmes

Sec 1 Social Studies Investigation @ National Museum: Our Sec 1 G1 JYians visited the National Museum of Singapore, exploring pre-colonial and colonial history through artefacts. They listened to docents explain residents' diverse experiences, adaptations, and responses to challenges, gaining insights into how various communities contributed to Singapore's development during these periods.

Sec 1 Social Studies Investigation @ Botanic Gardens: Our Sec 1 G1 JYians visited the Botanic Gardens to learn about Singapore's flora and fauna this year. They engaged with nature, explored ecological systems, and appreciated plant diversity. This immersive experience highlighted forests' importance in maintaining healthy ecosystems and inspired students to appreciate and protect the natural environment.

Sec 1 Geographical Investigation @ Bishan Park: Our Sec 1 G3/G2 students investigated human impacts on sustainability at Bishan-AMK Park this year. They tested Kallang River's water quality, made field sketches of sustainability features, and proposed improvements for the park. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of environmental stewardship and human activities' effects on naturalized environments.

Sec 2 Social Studies Investigation @ SDC: Our Sec 2 SS G1 JYians visited the Singapore Discovery Centre this year. They went on a guided tour of Singapore's history. They also visited interactive exhibits like 'Through The Lens Of Time.' They watched films imparting NE values and toured SAFTI, gaining insight into Singapore's defense. It was an enriching and insightful journey.

Sec 2 Social Studies Investigation Learning Journey @ URA: Governing through Urban Planning. Our Sec 2 G1 JYians visited the Singapore City Gallery, exploring urban planning, heritage preservation, and resource allocation this year. The trip highlighted Singapore's complex planning challenges and achievements. JYians also interviewed patrons at Maxwell Food Centre about common spaces, making the learning journey memorable and enriching.

Sec 3 Social Studies Investigation Learning Journey @ URA. Our Sec 3 JYians embarked on a Learning Journey to the Singapore City Gallery at the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to explore the complexities of urban planning. Through interactive exhibits, students experienced the decision-making process firsthand, gaining insights into how urban planners balance diverse needs and functions within a city. This experience deepened their understanding of governance and societal well-being, reinforcing their learning on how the government contributes to the greater good of society.

Sec 1 Historical Investigation @ Chinatown/Little India/Kampong Glam: Embarking on their Historical Investigation, our Sec 1 G3/G2 students delved into the vibrant tapestry of Singapore's past by exploring Chinatown, Kampung Glam, and Little India. Immersed in the sights, sounds, and stories of early immigrants, they journeyed through time, vividly experiencing the rhythms of daily life in these historic districts.

Sec 2 Historical Investigation @ SDC and Old Ford Factory: Embarking on their Historical Investigation, Secondary 2 students embarked on an enlightening voyage through time, traversing the halls of the Singapore Discovery Centre and the solemn corridors of the Former Ford Factory. Immersed in the poignant narratives of pre-independence Singapore, they uncovered the tumultuous hardships of the Japanese Occupation and the fervent struggle for liberation in the aftermath of World War II.

Sec 2 Geographical Investigation Learning Journey @ Skyville@Dawson: Our Sec 2 G3/G2 JYians explored Singapore's growth from a fishing village to a bustling city this year. Highlights included views from Skyville@Dawson, a visit to Singapore's first satellite town, and a tour of Queenstown estate. This experience showcased the evolution of public housing and the importance of sustainable, inclusive city planning.

Sec 3 Geographical Investigation @ Little Guilin: Our Sec 3 JYians conducted field observations, bridging classroom learning with real-world applications. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of sustainable urban neighborhoods, ecosystem services, and urban hazards. Observing human-nature interactions and spatial associations in action reinforced that Geography is all around us, helping them appreciate its impact on their daily lives.

Sec 4/5 Geographical Investigation @ Science Center: Our World. Our Sec 4/5 G3/G2 JYians embarked on an enriching Learning Journey to Science Centre Singapore to experience "See Our Earth Come Alive!". This hands-on exploration allowed students to interact with dynamic exhibits, deepening their understanding of tectonic processes and earth sciences.
